Marcelo Cunha has served as coordinator of the Afro-Brazilian Museum of the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) for more than a decade. During his tenure, he restructured the permanent exhibition, completed construction of a new storage facility and developed a mediator training program. Cunha also serves as the program coordinator for the museology program at UFBA, where he teaches both undergraduate and graduate students and conducts research on issues related to patrimonial heritage as well as African and Afro-Brazilian cultural representation. Cunha conducts research and sits on the faculty of the Multidisciplinary Program for Ethnic and African Studies at the Lusophone University of Humanities and Technologies in Lisbon. Born in Salvador, Bahia State, Cunha received his degree in museum studies and a master’s degree in information science from UFBA; he completed his doctoral studies in social history at Pontifical Catholic University in Sao Paulo and his postdoctoral work at the Lusophone University of Humanities and Technologies in Lisbon. Cunha has authored two papers significant to the African diáspora: “The Exhibition as an Information System: The Case of Afro-Brazilian Museum of Federal University of Bahia” and “Theatre of Memories, Stage of Oblivion: African and Black Diaspora Cultures on Display.”
