Antônio Carlos was born in Morro do Timbau, one of the communities of the Complexo da Maré in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and from an early age has been involved in social movements through the Catholic Church and community association movements. In the 1980s, he participated in the TVMaré, which produced videos of the memory and daily lives of the Maré communities. In 1998, Carlos was one of the founders of the Center for Studies and Solidarity Actions of the Maré (CEASM), which enables youth in the community to attend college and create the Rede Memoria Maré network, which researches the memory and history of Maré communities. In 1987, he graduated from the Law School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and in 2008 completed a master’s degree in social memory at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro – UNIRIO. He is currently president of the Brazilian Association of Museology (ABM). In 2006, he developed a museology plan and participatory management program at the Maré Museum Foundation.
