Alejandro Rubbo Sarralde

Since his youth, and at a time when his country was going through a dictatorial regime, he began his long-lasting involvement with culture, considering it the substantial axis for any change in society. He was first part of his high school choir and theatre group, and became part of a “murga” (band of street musicians) at the Centro Social La Paz in Canelones, city where he was born.

Then began his work as an organizer and manager, founding the “Cantando” socio-cultural group, starring in some of the most important musical events in Uruguay from 1982 to 1987, such as the National Festivals and Latin American Meetings of Folk Music, in addition to producing shows, books, records and carnival “comparsas” and “tablados”.

With the advent of democracy, and while working in Foreign Trade, he began his studies and training in Cultural Management, participating in various seminars and meetings, both nationally and internationally, often as a lecturer, talking about his experience in community work.

From 1994 to 2004, he founded and worked in the Canelones de-Muestra cultural movement, together with a number of artists and managers, achieving the participation of more than 50,000 people from 22 cities in Canelones, showcasing their art through the method of induced self-management. In 2012, he won a contest in the Municipality of Montevideo and served until 2018 as a Community Cultural Manager. Since 2006, he has worked at the Museo del Carnaval as Head of Community Engagement, and since 2018 became its Director.

He graduated from a Tertiary Degree in Museology at the Faculty of Humanities and Educational Sciences of the Universidad de la República in Montevideo.
