Jorge Melguizo

Head of Education and Culture
COMFAMA
Colombia
Jorge Melguizo

In his 57 years there have been two constant elements in his life: his dedication to social projects, from neighborhood activism to the definition of what is “public”, and his dedication to the local, as a field of understanding and work.

He studied Social Communication – Journalism, and that training still defines him in many ways, although nowadays he can’t really define his profession. He has lived for 33 years with his partner, a potter who makes ceramic crockery. They have a son who is a visual artist, dedicated to urban murals, to building sculptures that skaters may use, and to filmmaking.

Today he is Head of Education and Culture in one of the largest social organizations in Colombia, COMFAMA (Caja de Compensación Familiar de Antioquia). Before, since mid-2010 and until the end of 2018, his life was wandering and intense, as a lecturer and consultant, and this allowed him to be in 18 countries and more than 135 cities. Before that he did a thousand things, among them being Secretary of Social Development of Medellin (2009 – 2010) and Secretary of Civic Culture of Medellin (2005 – 2009). On social networks he works his way around Facebook and Twitter, which he uses for issues of culture, education, habitat, urbanism, coexistence and politics.
