Since 2011, Gonzalo Sánchez has been leading Centro de Memoria Histórica in Colombia. Prior to this, from 2007 to 2010, he was the director of Colombia's Historical Memory Group. While there he supervised the production of 17 reports memorializing the conflict.
Sánchez holds law and philosophy degrees from Universidad Nacional de Colombia, with a master's degree from the University of Essex, England, and a Ph.D. in Political Sociology from the The School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences, France.
His contributions to the study and understanding of conflict and violence in Colombia has earned him several distinctions, including the Martin Diskin Memorial Lectureship awarded by the Latin American Studies Association in 2000.
He has written books such as War and Politics in the Colombian Society (1991) and Museum, Memory and Nation (2000). Also he has given lectures at Duke University, University of Texas, The School of High Studies in Paris and at University College London.
